Two seated people need a particular shape
Picture the planned break: two people seated together, bags beside the blanket, and a food container between you. This needs a different footprint from lying down at full length. Mark a possible blanket size on the floor at home. You will see whether both seats and the food really fit, or whether you would mainly be carrying unnecessary length.
Shape affects the setting too. A long narrow blanket can be positioned easily on a broad lawn but may be awkward within a smaller permitted rest area. For a brief city-park pause, a surface that spreads quickly may matter more than thick padding. If you mostly use existing benches, consider whether two small seat pads address the actual need more directly.
Treat the upper surface and underside separately
A soft upper fabric tells you little about contact with damp grass. Read whether the manufacturer describes water repellency or a waterproof underside; those are not interchangeable promises. Seams, damage, and the particular way the product is used can also affect its contact with the ground.
Decathlon, for example, lists dimensions, construction, and care separately for a picnic blanket. Use this kind of information as a set of questions for the product you are considering, rather than as characteristics of every blanket. A substantial backing may fold differently from a thin textile. A fluffy upper surface may be pleasant to sit on while taking up more space when packed.
Consider how you will remove crumbs and pieces of grass. A strongly textured fabric may feel appealing in a shop but require more effort after your usual picnic than a smoother surface. This does not create a universal ranking of materials. It simply makes the after-use routine part of the choice.
Packed dimensions must suit the carrying position
Compare the folded or rolled length and diameter with your bag. Low weight offers limited convenience if a broad roll projects sideways whenever you pass through a doorway. If the blanket will be attached outside, use a suitable fastening arrangement you understand. A loosely hooked carrying handle may shift unexpectedly when the bag is put down.
An integrated cover removes one loose component but usually requires a particular folding sequence. If possible, check whether you can manage it without a large clean surface. After a short break, you should not need to spread the whole blanket out again simply to squeeze its final edge into a tight pouch.
Allow temporary separation between a wet or dirty underside and clothing or electronics on the return journey. At home, clean and dry the blanket fully according to its instructions. A convenient transport pouch does not replace that work.
A blanket does not create permission to stop anywhere
Choose a permitted stopping area and respect local notices. In protected landscapes especially, carrying a sitting surface does not allow you to leave paths or use vegetation as a picnic site. Existing seating may provide the more suitable short break.
If a blanket belongs in your routine, choose for its most frequent job: a quick seated lunch, a longer pause on grass, or occasionally placing belongings on a clean surface. Select enough area for that task and examine the folded format as carefully as the spread-out size.
