Three rivers provide one concrete focus
The Danube, Inn and Ilz meet at Dreiflüsseeck, as local visitor information explains. For a first visit, this supplies a clear spatial focus. Take time to observe instead of checking off a map label. How the water appears depends on conditions; do not expect colours and currents to reproduce a familiar photograph exactly. A view can remain worthwhile without matching the image that prompted the visit.
Choose the old-town route using a current plan. Rathausplatz and the area around St. Stephen's Cathedral provide other named reference points in official city material. Consider one before and another after the water. Both need not become lengthy interiors for the day to feel complete.
Give waterfront and cathedral quarter different roles
For a cathedral interior or musical event, check current arrangements with the responsible operator. An advertised concert is an appointment rather than an atmosphere available whenever you arrive. Decide whether it should shape the day before adding other fixed commitments. Keep its access requirements separate from the general town walk.
For a waterfront section, use a public route appropriate to current conditions. Notices and closures take precedence over a saved itinerary. Altered river levels may affect the route actually available. Do not approach the water more closely simply to reproduce a photograph. A safe public viewpoint provides sufficient opportunity to observe.
A pause can take place at an appropriate table or square in the old town. Remaining directly beside the river continuously is unnecessary for experiencing Passau's waterside setting. Returning between buildings can make that position more apparent. It also offers a different kind of shared time from another stretch of exposed walking.
Treat the higher ground as a separate addition
Veste Oberhaus appears as another option on official city material. It need not automatically fit the same short circuit. Check any intended visit and its access separately instead of treating an additional change in level as a small spontaneous extension after eating. Consider the return as well as getting there.
A compact day can remain with cathedral quarter, town-hall surroundings and Dreiflüsseeck. These provide different perspectives without turning departure into a sprint. Anyone wanting more can plan another day. A selection can show Passau more clearly than rapid movement between every visible height and waterfront. Keep the last optional section easy to omit if your chosen river stay becomes longer.
