Choose the seating arrangement before the numbers

Discuss what sitting together means. Side-by-side window and aisle seats, facing table seats, and two places in the same carriage offer different experiences. A table may suit conversation; reading or sleeping may favour another arrangement.

Use the available layout for the particular train. Nearby numbers do not establish adjacency without a plan. A general carriage diagram also does not reliably guarantee travel direction. If that matters, read the operator's qualification rather than assuming it.

A quiet area should suit actual use. If you expect calls or extended conversations, do not choose it solely for a perceived comfort advantage. Sitting together still involves respecting the surrounding area's rules.

A reservation is a separate component

Deutsche Bahn explains that long-distance seats can be booked independently from a ticket. Its overview also notes that a combined regional and long-distance journey cannot have one continuous seat reservation. Check each leg where a seat is expected.

The confirmation should match date, train, section, carriage, and seat. Booking together does not prevent a leg remaining unreserved. Check both passengers and distinguish an assigned seat from a preference merely requested.

When changing the ticket, recheck the seat order. DB notes that ticket changes do not automatically update a separate reservation. An old seat in the previous train does not arrange seating in the new one.

When two places are unavailable

Choose between the same train with separate seats, another connection, or another available category. The compromise depends on duration and how much shared seating matters. A short feeder need not follow the same priority as the long main leg.

Keep confirmations accessible. Locate the correct carriage without blocking the aisle with luggage for an extended discussion. If the actual formation differs, ask staff. Do not take somebody else's reserved seat as an assumed remedy for your changed circumstances.

A reservation establishes a particular seating arrangement rather than guaranteeing every other property of the journey. A changed train or carriage requires fresh clarification. That is precisely why checking ticket, connection, and seats separately is useful.

For a return journey, repeat the check rather than copying assumptions from the outward leg. A different train type may offer another layout even on the same route.
